We are very lucky to have the opportunity to work on several Georgian period kitchens in Suffolk and the surrounding areas. This latest project is another fantastic example of what can be achieved when we work with our clients to create their dream kitchen.
The Home
This beautiful home and grounds is close to the Suffolk coast. It was originally built in 1760 and is Grade 2 listed to preserve its historic features.
The family have enjoyed living here for more than 34 years, but were looking to create a bright and open space that would be in keeping with the rest of their outstanding home.
The Georgian Period Kitchen
The original cook’s kitchen was actually in the cellar but the family used the butler’s pantry as their working kitchen. It was a traditional oak kitchen throughout but located in a central room with no windows, so they couldn’t see and enjoy their beautiful grounds and gardens from inside it.
The Kitchen Extension
Beside the existing kitchen was an open-sided barn with a solid brick wall at the rear. They decided to transform the barn into a new space for their kitchen. This meant they could access both courtyards either side and see across the grounds to the vast gardens.
The Kitchen and Pantry Requirements
The original kitchen was made of oak and our clients knew they wanted their new one to be hand-painted with a shaker-style door. The work surfaces needed to be hard wearing and suitable to withstand any accidents by playful grandchildren. The kitchen was to include a large island unit and an AGA. They also required a large walk pantry separate from the main kitchen to provide more storage and preparation space.
The Debenvale Approach
Our clients approached three or four different kitchen companies. Debenvale were not the cheapest nor the most expensive, but what the family liked was the practical approach that Andrew took towards the design of the kitchen layout. He asked logical questions that other companies hadn’t even thought of. This impressed our clients from the outset.
They also received personal recommendations from other professionals involved in the project who confirmed Debenvale do make “brilliant kitchens”.
Our Handmade Kitchen
Once the design was created and our clients were happy to proceed, our cabinet-makers skilfully crafted the furniture by hand at our wood workshop, adjoining our Suffolk kitchen showroom.
Using solid woods and high-quality hinges, runners and fixings, the cabinetry was assembled and prepared piece by piece to be delivered to our clients’ home.
Our Installation Team
Fitting a bespoke kitchen takes great skill and attention to detail and our highly-skilled team of kitchen fitters, tilers and painters are passionate about their work.
“The people who carried out the work were all really nice and helpful and just nice to have around,” our clients said.
A Quartzite Statement
The worktop chosen was White Macaubas Quartzite, a stunning Brazilian granite worksurface and splashback. The whites and charcoal veining blend perfectly with the blue AGA and the colour scheme of the kitchen. It will withstand scratches and heat and makes a huge statement in this kitchen.
The Hand-Painted Kitchen
Our clients chose Juniper Ash blue for their kitchen island with a darker blue on the other doors. But when the hand-painting began, our clients changed their minds. This was not a problem and highlights just one of the benefits of having a hand-painted kitchen in that colours can easily be amended and updated.
“Chris was really helpful, he clearly has a passion and great understanding of colour. We discussed options and, with his guidance, we decided on a French Grey to compliment the island, AGA and worksurface. We love the finished result.”
