Victorian townhouse kitchen transformation

A Stunning Victorian Townhouse Kitchen in Ipswich

We were delighted to undertake the renovation of this beautiful Victorian townhouse shaker kitchen in Ipswich, Suffolk.  This is another of our great projects from our Kitchens team.

The brief:

This part of the property was originally the kitchen and conservatory. The home was having extensive building works to remove and extend over the old conservatory.

Our clients were looking for a kitchen to compliment the style and age of their home, making the best use of the space and with a central island unit for preparing and dining. This is a very large L shaped space with a part vaulted ceiling and step down to the dining area and so it was important to accentuate these features and maximise the feeling of space and light.

The design:

With a large room to work with, we designed an ultra large central island unit with a round sink bowl and plenty of surface space for preparation. Around the island are large drawers, a hidden pull out waste bin and built in wine cellar and Neff oven.

All other appliances were kept to this end of the kitchen to make a practical cooking area, with a substantial mantel framing their existing Rangemaster cooker and creating a central focal point.

To the right we included a Fisher Paykal American fridge freezer and to the left, drawers and cupboard space with with a pull out swivel system in the corner, Oak shelving and a additional sink.

A round seating area was included at the opposite end of the island, underneath the vaulted ceiling and in sight of the large glass doors with views across the dining room and garden.

The wall behind has been filled with a large dresser with in built Oak larder and glass fronted display cabinets.

A mixture of materials were included throughout the kitchen, the units were hand painted with Oak inside the cabinets and featured on the island, shelving and mantel. The step was also carefully handcrafted in Oak and this becomes beautiful feature in the room.

The island and work surfaces are topped with Arden Blue Suede Silestone and floors are limestone flooring.

Client comments:

” My favourite piece is the island and mantel. We were initially concerned about the size of the island as it was so large but it fills the space perfectly and the mantel just sets it all off.

Everything works which comes down to the initial design and planning stages, we were never told that something couldn’t be done. I could never quite visualise the floor step but now it’s in I absolutely love it, it’s become a key feature of the room.

There is no wasted space and a place for everything. I have so much flexibility with all the cupboard space, its so versatile.

The team were terrific, they really were. Nothing was too much trouble and they didn’t have it easy as there was a lot of building going on so lots of different trades coming and going and getting in their way. They were all such nice guys, very professional and nothing was too much trouble. They had a great attitude.

My father was a carpenter by trade and he was very impressed as it was all be installed, he said that you could tell that everything was very well built.

We had no issues at all, the team just got with the job.

We absolutely love it!”
